How to Become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)

Registered Behavior Technicians implement treatment plans designed by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) and Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts (BCaBA). RBTs play a crucial role in the remediation of deficits associated with autism. RBT work is extremely gratifying, and a job that anyone would be proud to hold. But how do you become an RBT?

First steps in the RBT process

1. Age: You must be 18 years or older to start the process
2. Education: You must hold at least a high school diploma
3. Background check: You must pass a background check
4. Training: You must pass a 40-hour RBT training. Typically this will be provided by the company that hires you as a behavior technician in training. However, there are other options online that allow you to complete this process independently.
5. Competency: Once you pass your 40-hour RBT training, you will take a competency assessment. This competency assessment will be administered by a BCBA. At this point you should try and be hired. If you are hired, a BCBA at your company should administer this competency.

After you pass the RBT competency

1. Apply at on the BACB website
   
2. Once you apply and are accepted you will be invited to take the RBT exam
3. Register for the RBT exam. You will receive an email with instructions
4. PASS THE RBT EXAM. Check out our videos and study material to improve your chances.

After you pass the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) exam

1. Begin working as an RBT
2. Receive ongoing supervision (monthly) from a BCBA
3. Renew your certification annually
